Troll Dolls are always a popular type of Ugly Doll. Some say they were among the first among the particular doll genre that were decidedly un-beautiful.

Troll Dolls were first designed by Thomas Dam of Denmark in the 1950s. Those early versions were made of out wood and later out of rubber and vinyl. The early Troll Dolls that were created by Thomas Dam are highly collectible. Troll doll popularity peaked in the mid-1960s and had a nostalgic revival in the early 1990s. Animal trolls dolls are usually very collectible as well as moon trolls, black trolls, and 2-headed trolls. Large trolls (12″ and over) there were designed by Dam are also very collectible. Actually, any original Dam trolls from the 1960s that have their hair and body in good condition are desirable. Gee, just like people!

Artist and designer Mitchell Bernal has combined the cold and scary anatomical bareness of a skeleton with warm and sweet cuddle-like animals to come up with the concatenated form of Skelanimals.

Appearing primarily as black silhouettes with see-through bodies that reveal a stark white skeleton, the smallish and seemingly friendly animals each favor their own scary movie yet exhibit all the personality traits of regular pets — some love being chased, some just want to play, and others like to sing. Of course, in case it isn’t obvious these Skelanimals are not among the living.

UglyDolls have been the hottest craze in doll ugliness for the last five years. Designed by Parsons School of Design artists David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim, the 14 inch limited edition plush dolls have become near pop-icons in their own right.

According to *ahem* ugly legend, in early 2000 David Horvath was living in Los Angeles when his girlfriend Sun-Min Kim moved to Korea to be with her family. During their separation Horvath wrote to Kim and at the end of his letters he would draw one of several cartoon characters.

One Christmas Kim sent Horvath a hand-made plush toy replica of one of his cartoon drawings. Excited by the gift, Horvath in turn showed it to Giant Robot bookstore owner Eric Nakamura who mistakenly thought Horvath was trying to promote his doll for sale. Nakamura like the doll so much he decided to sell them at his store.

UglyDolls have been sold by the thousands in specialty shops as well as mainstream stores such as Urban Outfitters, Barneys New York, and Tower Records.
